How to obtain a Burn Permit

About our burn ordinance:
The City of Athens abides by all state burning laws.  The city does not permit the burning of leaves, tires or rubber products, vinyl siding, shingles, plastic, paper products including cardboard, asphalt roofing materials, demolition debris, building or construction materials, paint or aerosol cans, copper or electrical wires, or household trash.

Other restrictions include burning after dark without approval of the on-duty shift supervisor.

Burn projects larger than 10 cubic yards will only be permitted by forced air pit burning.

You must obtain permission prior to any outdoor burning taking place.  

To obtain a burn permit:

Monday - Friday  8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. :

After-hours or Weekends :
Call 423-744-2763 or 423-744-2765.  **Please note, when on a call, we are unable to answer these two numbers. 

We do not issue burn permits for county residents.  To obtain a burn permit for the county, please call 423-263-7181.

“We also encourage everyone to use caution when it comes to barbecuing with charcoal grills, smokers, and the use of outdoor fire pits.”  Do not use these devices near walls or any portion of a structure.  As always, we are available to answer any questions you may have.
