Mapping
the Athens Stormwater System
In compliance with the regulations set forth
in the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation
MS4 permit, the City of Athens GIS Department has begun mapping
the Athens Stormwater System.
Utilizing a GIS (Geographic Information System),
stormwater system features like catchbasins, culverts, ditches
and ponds have been inventoried in the field and mapped into
a computer. Attributes of these features are also recorded
in the field for future analysis. The components of the GIS
include: ESRI ArcInfo 9 desktop computer software, ESRI ArcPad
7 handheld computer software and a Trimble GeoXH mobile mapping
system.
As of April 2007, 50% of the Athens Stormwater
System has been mapped in the field and can be included on
paper maps for display and analysis.
