CHECKLIST FOR GRADING PERMIT APPROVAL PROCESS

1 Have the necessary drawings/plans been submitted to the Public Works Department?

2 Have three (3) copies been received? (One (1) copy will be returned with the permit.)

3 Do the drawings/plans properly depict the proposed work?

4 Do the drawings/plans meet all the necessary requirements?

5 Has the applicant submitted the necessary Grading Permit Application?

6 Has the applicant paid the necessary application fees?

7 Does the applicant agree to comply with the City of Athens Erosion and Sedimentation Control Measures listed below?

8 Has the applicant or other responsible party contacted the Athens Utilities Board to discuss utility service and availability to this site? This permit does not address utility services.

9 Has the Public Works Director or his designee reviewed and approved the necessary submittals (application & drawings/plans)?


Once all the above conditions are met, the Public Works Department will issue a
Grading Permit based on the City of Athens Grading Permit Policy.

  • This permit will be subject to all rules, regulations, ordinances, and policies
    of the City of Athens.
  • Erosion and Sedimentation Control Measures (§4.15 Athens Municipal Zoning Ordinance)
  • The following control measures should be used as a minimum for erosion and sedimentation control:
  • The smallest practical area of land should be exposed at any one time during development. Mulching or other protective measures should be used to protect exposed areas.
  • Areas that will be exposed for more than three (3) months shall be seeded and mulched or landscaped.
  • Silt fencing, hay/straw bales, temporary furrows, terraces, sediment or debris basins should be installed to prevent washing and erosion during construction.
  • In areas where soil may wash onto the roadway or into a drainage basin, the developer will be required to install and maintain a silt fence, hay bales, or both.
  • Final vegetation should be installed as soon as practical in the development after the land is exposed.
  • A gravel construction entrance shall be constructed prior to any site work. This construction entrance will be maintained by the owner or his/her contractor throughout the construction process.
  • Sediment washed onto roadways or into drainage ditches or basins, and soil tracked onto roadways by construction equipment/vehicles or daily ingress and egress onto the site shall be removed at the end of each working day by the contractor, developer, or property owner.
