Fire Suppression
The City of Athens Fire
Department protects a population of 13,220 covering an area
of 13.5 square miles. This is accomplished using 4 engines,
1 rescue unit, 1 brush unit, and 1 aerial unit. The department
also houses a hazardous materials unit with specially trained
personnel available. Currently the department holds an ISO
Rating of Class 4.
During 2009 the Athens
Fire Department responded to:
500 Calls for service
34 Structure fires
17 Vehicle fires
43 Brush or other fires
65 Wrecks with injuries
The remainder of the alarms were false.
The department is made
up of 21 full time employees. Each shift consists of a Captain,
Lieutenant, 2 engineers, and 3 firefighters. In the event
of a major incident we also have 15 paid on call firefighters
that can respond.
