The Board of Zoning Appeals consists of five
(5) members appointed by the Athens City Council: one (1)
designated member of the Planning Commission (the mayor or
a Councilman), one (1) appointed members of the Planning Commission,
and three (3) members appointed at large.
Board of Zoning Appeals meetings are held at
the call of the chairman, and at such other times as the Board
may determine. All meetings of the Board are held at the Municipal
Building located at 815 N. Jackson Street and are open to
the public. The duty of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to
hear and decide appeals where the petitioner believes that
there is an error in any order, requirement, permit decision,
determination, or refusal made by the building inspector or
other administration official. The board also hears and decides
requests for interpretation of the zoning map and applications
for variances.
