Mayor John Proffitt, Jr.

 

Mayor John Proffitt, Jr. was elected Mayor by the Athens City Council on November 16, 2004. Mayor Proffitt was first elected to the Athens City Council in June 1995 and was reelected to serve another four year term in November 2000 and again in November of 2004. He was appointed Vice Mayor in January 1999 and was reappointed to that position following the November 2000 election. He previously served as Mayor from October of 2002 through November 2002. He was appointed Vice Mayor once again in November 2002 and served in that position until being elected Mayor.

Mayor Proffitt has served on numerous boards and committees including the Athens Regional Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, McMinn County Senior Citizens, the Exposition Center Committee, and the McMinn County Department of Juvenile Services. Additionally, he serves as a member of the TML Board of Directors. Mayor Proffitt, a longtime resident of Athens and McMinn County, is employed as Residential Marketing Manager for TVA, serves as President of the Home Builders’ Association of Tennessee Associates Council, and is an active member of the Athens Kiwanis Club.

Mayor Proffitt currently represents the City Council on the McMinn County Economic Development Authority and is an ex-officio member of the Recreation Advisory Board.
