Meet
Athens City Manager Mitchell B. Moore. As his title indicates,
he is responsible for the daily management of the city government.
All department heads report directly to the Manager who in turn,
reports to the City Council. Mitchell is a native of Sweetwater,
Tennessee and returned to manage the City of Athens in September
1999. Prior to his return, he was City Manager for Belmont,
North Carolina from 1991-1999. He has also served as City Manager
in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and Melbourne Beach, Florida. He
began his career in city management with the City of Athens
as Assistant to the City Manager from 1980-1984. Mitchell is
a 1975 graduate from Austin Peay State University with a B.S.
in Business Administration and completed his Masters study in
City Management from East Tennessee State University in 1980.
Mitchell presently is involved in numerous community activities,
including Habitat for Humanity, Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors,
Mid-East Tennessee Regional Fair Board, the McMinn County Economic
Development Authority, the Athens Kiwanis Club, and Leadership
McMinn Class of 2001. Professionally, he is an active member
of the International City Managers Association and serves on
the Board of Directors of the Tennessee City Managers Association.
Additionally, he has served on numerous committees representing
the Tennessee Municipal League, the Tennessee Department of
Transportation, and the Southeast Tennessee Development District.
