Council
Member Dick Pelley was first elected to a four year term on the City
Council during the November 2002 election and was re-elected to serve another four year term in November 2006 and November 2010.
Dick moved to Athens in 1991 and immediately
began serving on several city committees prior to being elected
to the City Council. He is married to Sylvia Pelley who teaches
at Ingleside Elementary School. His one daughter, Jill, resides
in Cleveland, Ohio with her husband Mike Burke. For his day
job, Dick teaches at Tennessee Wesleyan College where he is
a tenured Professor of Psychology. Dick has hobbies that range
from: reading a good mystery novel; playing an active game
of racquetball; and helping people.
Dr. Pelley is a recent recipent of Rep. Harold Love, Community Service Award for 2010.
Council Member Pelley currently serves as the
Council's representative on the Athens Regional Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
He also serves as the council's representative on the McMinn County Economic Development Authority and is an ex-officio member of the Recreation Advisory Board. Dr. Pelley serves on the National League of Cities Council on Youth, Education and Families.
